Peaks Island... Mini-Split Installation
I’m excited to share another successful installation of a whole-house mini-split heat pump system for a customer’s summer residence on Peaks Island, Maine. This project was designed to deliver efficient, reliable, and zoned central heating and cooling for year-round comfort.
Whole-House Heat Pump Installation - Peaks Island
The system features a high-efficiency outdoor unit paired with two slim-duct indoor units—one located in the basement to serve the first floor and another in the attic for the second floor.
- First-Floor: Two supply registers in the living room, two in the kitchen, one in the study, and two in the dining room. A floor-fitted return in the living area ensures balanced airflow throughout the space. A wall-mounted control in the living area allows easy temperature adjustments for this zone.
- Second-Floor: Five ceiling supply registers—one for each bedroom and one in the bathroom. A dedicated control unit provides independent comfort control upstairs, allowing for fully zoned climate management.
This whole-house designed system provides the comfort and efficiency of a central heating and cooling solution, with the added benefits of zoning control, whisper-quiet operation, and energy savings.
Frequently Asked Questions – Mini Split Heat Pumps in Peaks Island, Maine
Q: Can a mini split heat pump heat and cool an entire house on Peaks Island?
Yes. A properly designed mini split system with slim-duct indoor units can provide whole-house heating and cooling throughout the entire house. Our Peaks Island installation utilized one indoor unit in the basement to serve the first floor and another in the attic to serve the second floor, ensuring comfort throughout the entire home.
Q: What is a slim-duct mini split system?
A slim-duct mini split uses short duct runs connected to a concealed indoor unit. Supply registers can be placed in multiple rooms, providing the benefits of central heating and cooling while maintaining the efficiency and zoning flexibility of a mini-split system.
Q: Can a mini split system provide separate temperature control for each floor?
Yes. With separate indoor units and wall-mounted controls, each floor can be managed independently. In this Peaks Island project, the first and second floors were set up as separate zones with individual thermostats for customized comfort.
Q: Are mini split heat pumps efficient for Maine's coastal climate?
Absolutely. Modern heat pumps are designed to perform efficiently even in cold coastal Maine winters. They also provide efficient cooling during the summer, making them an excellent choice for seasonal or year-round homes on Peaks Island.
Q: How many rooms can one mini split system serve?
It depends on the design. With slim-duct units, one system can serve multiple rooms. In this project, the first floor was served by seven supply registers across four rooms, and the second floor by five ceiling registers in bedrooms and a bathroom.
Why Choose a Mini-Split Heat Pump System?
Homeowners on Peaks Island need a heating and cooling system that’s reliable, efficient, and built for Maine’s coastal climate. A mini split heat pump with slim-duct indoor units is the perfect solution—it delivers quiet comfort to every room, allows for independent zone control, and reduces energy costs compared to traditional systems. Whether it’s a seasonal getaway or a year-round residence, this type of installation provides the flexibility, efficiency, and peace of mind that island homeowners are looking for in a heating and cooling system.
